May is Healthy Vision Month!
Your eye care team at Miami Eye is excited to share six easy steps to improve the health of your eyes:
- Do your eyes feel fine? That’s good news! However, many eye diseases don’t show symptoms early on. That’s why it’s so important to schedule an annual eye exam with your doctor.
- Stop smoking. Smoking is bad for your entire body, and it even affects your eye health. Smoking increases the risk of macular degeneration, a potentially serious condition that can eventually lead to blindness.
- Wear sunglasses in full sun but also on the cloudy days. The sunglasses you wear should offer protection from up to 100% of UVA and UVB radiation.
- Wear safety glasses more often. Safety glasses can help protect your eyes when you’re working in construction or other trades, but they also can help when you’re at home working around the house this spring. Talk to your kids about wearing safety glasses when they’re playing sports—and make sure you lead by example to protect your vision.
- Spend a lot of time on the computer? Consider an exam for prescription computer frames, with blue light filtering to protect you from too much time on your digital devices. Also practice resting your eyes with the 20/20/20 rule. That means every 20 minutes you should glance away from your device to focus on something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This helps keep your eyes from becoming fatigued.
- Practice safer contact-wearing. Wash your hands before and after you insert your contacts. This helps prevent the spread of eye infections that can harm your vision. Also, disinfect and replace your contacts on a regular basis to keep your eyes safer and your vision clearer.
